I only have one criticism about my favorite TV show, So You Think You Can Dance, and that is this: I don't give a rat's ass what your back story is. I don't care if your mom is unemployed, or your dad is fighting cancer, or your little brother is in a wheelchair - I just don't.
I watch the show to see good dancers become great dancers. I watch it because every now and again there's a breakout performance that I remember literally for years.
I'll give you a for-instance: There's a guy tonight who's twin brother has an extreme case of Spina Bifida. It's tragic and I feel for him and his family. HOWEVER, that should not translate into a free ticket to Vegas. If the guy is good, let him go through - if not, boot his ass.
Now, after the fact, once the guy, or girl, has made it into the top 5 or so, sure, let's hear the whole story. But until then, you're just a number to me, pal. And if you suck, then get the hell off the stage and go suck someplace else.
That's it for now, but between this show and the College Softball World Series, don't expect any good posts for a while. They'll either be gay or REALLY gay.

Since I'm the only one of your millions of readers who leaves comments (aside from immediate family and foreign spammers), I feel like I have a responsibility to keep it up, no matter how gay the post. Remember how in Model-Netics I always had to make a comment after Jody presented a model? It's the "teacher's pet" in me - I realize it can be annoying, but I can't help myself.
I do not watch SYTYCD, and have no interest in it. However, I can relate to your disdain for contestants trying to score sympathy points with their sob stories. People make all kinds of excuses in order to make up for poor performance. You hear it all the time in sports - our team had a tougher schedule than yours; we had some key players injured; the referee had it in for us. Sports movies tend to explore this theme a lot - the better team is evil, while the shitty team is good, but somehow they manage to win the game because fate causes the evil team to foul up. In real life, though, the better team tends to win, whether they are "evil" or not. This doesn't sit well with people who have been conditioned to root for the underdog, so they try to sway things when there is subjective judging involved.
They should have a separate category for hard-luck cases, and the "real" bracket for the actual dancers. Similarly, I think there should be an "open" category for sports that typically have weight classes. You can compete in your weight class and accept a more limited title, or you could compete in the open class against everyone. Most would assume that the heavyweight champion can beat all the lower classes, but an open class would test that. If your objective is to measure raw ability, there should be no points given for being a lightweight, or female, or whatever, and certainly no points for tragedies in your background.
